An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit areas north of Tokyo Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

No casualties or damage have been immediately reported.

The source of the quake, which occurred at around 12:40 p.m. (0340 GMT), was some 40 kilometers underground off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture

The quake affected the Tohoku and Kanto regions, including Fukushima, Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures.

The Shinkansen high-speed passenger train services are in normal operation, media reported, citing its operator East Japan Railway Co.
