Vietnam and Thailand have agreed to foster their traditional friendship and all-round cooperative ties, as well as their coordination on international forums, Vietnam News Agency reported Monday.
During talks between Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his visiting Thai counterpart Samak Sundaravej on Monday, the two sides agreed to push for consultation at the foreign ministerial level and for the formula of the joint strategy of economic partnership (JSEP). They agreed to strengthen cooperation on transport, healthcare, and rice, rubber and prawn production.
They also agreed to double bilateral trade revenues to 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2010 and encourage Thailand's leading enterprises to do business in Vietnam.
Samak pledged not to let any individuals or organizations use the Thai territory for their hostile schemes against Vietnam. He also promised to create favorable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to live and work in Thailand.
Samak and Dung also touched upon the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (AMECS), the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program, and other regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The Thai prime minister asked for Vietnam's support in his country's bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council in the coming term.
After their talks, the two prime ministers witnessed the signing of a bilateral agreement against human trafficking, especially women and girls, and assistance to victims.
Also on Monday, Samak met with the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nong Duc Manh, and Vietnamese State President Nguyen Minh Triet.
