The country head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Sri Lanka Toon Vandenhove met Sri Lanka's Army Commander Sarath Fonseka on Mondayto discuss the humanitarian situation in the island's war torn north, the military said.
Vandenhove asked for facilitation of a direct link between the ICRC and the military in the uncleared areas in the north currently held by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.
The two had discussed the plight of the people trapped in the northern Wanni district currently held by the LTTE.
Fonseka had assured unhindered access to ICRC officials into the rebel held districts in order to attend to the humanitarian needs, the military said.
The ICRC early this year expressed concern over the civilians trapped in the ongoing armed confrontations between government troops and LTTE rebels.
The ICRC in close co-operation with the Sri Lanka Red Cross keeps links between families separated by the conflict.
