In Bhutan, the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT), led by former premier Jigmi Thinley scored a victory in the first ever elections of the country, according to local reports Tuesday.
The DPT made a virtual clean sweep bagging 44 out of the total 47 seats in the National Assembly. People's Democratic Party (PDP),the only party contesting the polls, managed to get only 3 seats, the reports said.
The PDP is headed by Sangay Ngedup, who is a former prime minister in the old royal regime of king Jigme Singye Wangchuk.
Announcing the results, Chief Election Commissioner Kunzang Wangdi said the notification of the results will be issued Tuesday. He said the total voter turnout in the elections was over 79 percent.
Meanwhile, New Delhi has congratulated Bhutan for its successful conduct of the first-ever elections to the National Assembly.
The External Affairs Ministry spokesman reiterated India's commitment to provide all possible assistance to the royal government of Bhutan during its period of transition. Source:Xinhua
