Japan plans to reduce the country's overall garbage amount by 60 percent from the fiscal 2000 level by fiscal year 2015 and further promote energy efficiency in its campaign to fight against global warming.

According to a plan approved by the government on Tuesday, the Japanese public will be encouraged to refrain from using disposable products, decrease domestic waste by 20 percent in the corresponding period, and depend on public transportation, while companies will be urged to develop energy-saving products.

Japan's entire garbage volume will be reduced to 23 million tons by 2015 if the target of the whole program were reached.
