Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said Wednesday that the authorities will be moving on to the next phase in the hunt for escaped terrorist Mas Selamat Kastari, focusing on specific intelligence on where he might be hiding.
Wong said the police and the Singapore Armed Forces have been conducting a systematic search of forested areas and unoccupied buildings since Mas Selamat's escape, and this general search will be completed in about a week, according to local TV Channel News Asia.
Alleged Singapore leader of the terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) Mas Selamat escaped from a detention center on Feb. 27.
The deputy prime minister also said information showed the wanted man is still in Singapore. He gave this update on the manhunt efforts after meeting some 80 Gurkha soldiers involved in the search, Channel News Asia reported.
He added that while deployment of large ground forces will be scaled down, they remain operationally ready for immediate deployment if needed.
Other operations such as security inspections at land checkpoints and sea patrol surveillance will continue.
