The first standing joint force of Japan's Ground, Marine and Air Self-Defense Forces (SDF) was officially established on Wednesday, with a flag-conferring ceremony being held at the Defense Ministry headquarters in central Tokyo.
The establishment of the SDF Command and Communication System Force was aimed at promoting and supporting combined military action, a format first proposed in March 2006.
According to the Defense Ministry, the new force consists of about 600 officers and soldiers from all the three categories of the SDF. Their major tasks include maintenance of communication networks covering SDF bases and fast-reaction to Internet attacks from enemies.
