Air New Zealand has become the latest airline to give passengers the opportunity to offset their carbon footprint, Radio New Zealand reported on Thursday.
The airline said that from Thursday, local customers will be able to buy carbon credits online, which have been supplied by Trustpower's Tararua windfarm.
It will cost environmentally aware customers an extra 4.50 NZ dollars (3.25 U.S. dollars) to travel between Auckland and Wellington and an extra 88 NZ dollars for those flying between Auckland and Los Angeles.
Air New Zealand said it has also become the first in the world to set up an environmental trust, which will fund research into alternative fuels and support conservation initiatives. The first will be to plant 85,000 trees on a Hawke's Bay farm.
