Musharraf: fighting extremism, terrorism in Pakistan's own interest |

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said Thursday that Pakistan was fighting extremism and terrorism in its own national interest.
He was talking to a six-member U.S. Congress delegation led by Congressman John F. Tierney.
Musharraf stressed the importance of a comprehensive strategy that combines security, political and socio-economic development tracks.
During the meeting, both sides discussed recent political developments, Pakistan-U.S. relations and regional situation.
Musharraf said that the elections represented a victory for the forces of moderation.
He said that the new government would enjoy his full cooperation. He also stressed the importance of political stability to ensure focus on economic growth, social development, and fight against extremism and terrorism.
Musharraf highlighted multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and the U.S. and underlined the need for deepening and broadening bilateral trade and investment ties and enhanced market access for Pakistan.
The U.S. delegation congratulated Musharraf on the successful Feb. 18 elections and expressed U.S. support for the process of democratic transition. The delegation members lauded Musharraf's efforts over the past several years for political stability and economic revival in Pakistan. They recognized Pakistan's role in counter-terrorism efforts and promotion of regional stability.
