The Japanese government approved a scheme Friday to step up measures aimed at achieving emission-cut goal prescribed in the Kyoto Protocol.
The move came as existing measures are considered insufficient to attain the Kyoto goal, which requires Japan to reduce its green gas emissions between 2008 and 2012 by 6 percent on average from the 1990 level.
Under the plan, the government calls on the industrial sector to play a more active role and improve energy efficiency in a bid to reduce emissions. The government is set to check progress twice a year, and will revise the plan and adopt additional measures if need be.
In a statement issued Friday, Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda urges active participation of the industrial sector as well as that of the public to help achieve the goal.
