A huge explosion Saturday morning hit a power plant in southern Afghan province of Helmand, killing two and injuring eight others, provincial police chief Mohammad Hussian Andiwal said.

"It happened around 9 a.m.(GMT0430) as explosion ripped through the administrative department of power plant in Gereshk district leaving two staffs dead and wounding eight others including six employees," Andiwal told Xinhua.

He blamed the enemies of peace a term used against Taliban insurgents for the incident. However, Taliban militants fighting government have yet to make any comment.

Meanwhile, a policeman identified himself as Abdullah Shah told Xinhua on the spot that he saw at least four wounded including the factory director have been moved out from the site

If Taliban militants are behind the incident, it will be the first time they have focused their gun towards power plants in the war-torn country.

Taliban fighters since February have been engaged in targeting mobile phone towers and so far have destroyed some one dozen phone antennas in the restive southern region.

Conflicts and Taliban-related violence have left more than 300 people dead so far this year in war-torn Afghanistan, where Taliban militants recently have vowed to launch the "Spring offensive" to intensify their guerrilla-style attacks on national army and foreign troops.
