An earthquake with the magnitude of 6.2 rocked Aceh province of Sumatra Island Indonesia on Sunday morning, no initial report of damages or casualty, meteorology agency said.
The quake struck at 00:30 Jakarta time (1730 GMT Saturday) with the epicenter at 113 kilometers northwest Sinabang town of Aceh province and at 30 kilometers under sea bed, an official of the agency Meida Yustiana told Xinhua.
The intensity of the quake was felt at 4 to 5 MMI (modified mercally intensity) at the town and Semeleu island of the province, she said.
In Sinabang town, the closest with the epicenter, no report of damage or casualty, said a military officer in charge named only Effendi at the town military command.
The officer said that the shakes of the quake was strong but short and only caused panic.
"So far, there is no building collapsed or casualty. The quake only triggered panic, people fled their homes, but now most of them had already returned homes," he told Xinhua on phone from the town.
In 2004, over 170,000 people were dead in Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra Island after a tsunami triggered by a powerful quake devastated coastal areas of the province and others countries in southeast Asia.
Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet that cause frequent volcanic movements. Source:Xinhua
