The House of Representatives endorsed a provisional bill Monday to extend a series of special tax measures, which would have expired Monday, till the end of May.

The move came in an attempt to avoid confusion in various areas, including used car, land sales and financial transactions in the Tokyo offshore market.

The bill was endorsed in the ruling bloc-led lower house with approval from both the ruling and opposition camps. But the two blocs failed to reach an agreement on the extension of gas tax and other road-related taxes, and the gas tax is thus set to be cut by25 yen per liter as of Tuesday.

The opposition-dominated House of Councillors is expected to approve the stopgap bill in the afternoon before it is enacted within the day.
