The Japanese Cabinet approved on Tuesday the 2008 edition of foreign affairs blue paper, which glorified the improvement of Japan's Asia diplomacy in the past year and gave positive evaluation of the development of the Japan-China relations.
The blue paper, which was handed in by Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura, said Japan's Asia diplomacy achieved significant development in 2007, with relationship with China being improved and diplomacy toward India being strengthened.
A "resonating diplomacy" proposed by Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda who has been calling for simultaneous development of both the Japan-U.S. alliance and relations with Asian countries since taking office in last September, has been carried out, the paper said.
About the Japan-China ties, the paper said the exchange of visits by Fukuda and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao further brighten the future of the bilateral mutual beneficial ties based on common strategic interests.
About the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, the paper applauded the signing in last October of a joint document in the second denuclearizing stage of the six-party talks, but warned against negligence about the direction of the denuclearizing process in the future.
The paper said nothing had been achieved in resolving the issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's past abduction of Japanese nationals.
About the Maritime Self-Defense Force's refueling mission in the Indian Ocean to support the U.S.-led antiterrorism operations in and around Afghanistan, the paper said Japan will continue to make positive efforts for the war against terrorism, adding that as a "peaceful and cooperative nation," Japan will "play a responsible role."
