A suicide attacker Friday morning exploded himself near a police vehicle, killing three policemen and one civilian, injuring eight others, in southern Afghan province of Helmand, said a police official.

Mohammad Hussein Andiwal, the provincial police chief, told Xinhua that it occurred at around 9 a.m. (0430 GMT) when the suicide attacker came by foot to the police vehicle parking outside a local market in Lashkar gah district, the capital of Helmand province, then exploded himself.

"One policemen and seven other civilians were injured in the incident," he said.

Taliban insurgents have yet to make any comments.

More than 8,000 people had been killed in violent incidents in Afghanistan in 2007 while over 300 have lost their lives in conflicts and militancy so far this year in the war-battered country.
