Singapore welcomes the bilateral meeting between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)and the United States next Tuesday, a Singapore Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Saturday.
Commenting on the bilateral meeting between the DPRK and the United States in Singapore, the spokesman said that the city state hopes both sides will have a good discussion that will move the Six-Party Talks forward, leading to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
The U.S. State Department confirmed on Friday that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill will meet with KimKye Gwan, the DPRK's vice foreign minister and head of the DPRK delegation to the six-party talks, in Singapore next Tuesday.
State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said that the Singapore meeting, a follow-up on the discussions that were held in Geneva last month, will cover both issues related to the declaration itself, as well as the implementation of the disablement phase of talks.
Under an agreement reached by the six-party talks in Beijing in February last year, the DPRK agreed to abandon all nuclear weapons and nuclear programs and declare all its nuclear programs and facilities by the end of last year in exchange for diplomatic and economic incentives.
However, the DPRK missed the deadline, although there was reported progress in its nuclear disablement and declaration.
The United States has urged the DPRK to fully declare its nuclear programs and activities. Source: Xinhua
