The Myanmar authorities have warned through official media against interference in its internal affairs by some foreign embassies stationed in the country, blaming some unidentified diplomats for regularly contacting the opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).
"Certain foreign powers with the intention of interfering in the internal affairs of Myanmar, are now resorting to a variety of means, while aiding and abetting some local political parties to destabilize the country," a report of the New Light of Myanmar said Thursday.
The report charged some diplomats of certain foreign embassies in Yangon with regularly visiting the headquarters of the NLD, holding talks and "giving directives to harm the interest of the nation and the people", citing the fact that they visited the party office 19 times in March alone and 277 times a year before.
"People who favor stability of the state desire that the activities of certain foreign embassies to interfere in the internal affairs of the nation violate the Vienna Convention and international laws," the report said, warning the embassies to stop such activities.
Meanwhile, the NLD, in a statement on March 31, urged people in the country to go to polls and vote against the constitution draft, based on the detailed basic principles laid down at the National Convention, in the forthcoming nationwide referendum set for May 10.
