Vietnam needs some 60 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (3.75 billion U.S. dollars) to build seaports from now to 2010, local newspaper Transport reported Wednesday.

The country has planned to build 10 seaports, including an international one in northern Hai Phong city, and another in central Khanh Hoa province.

Of the total money, 20.5 trillion VND (over 1.28 billion dollars) will go to the building of seaports in the northern region, and 14 trillion VND (875 million dollars) in the central province.

The country wants to build deepwater seaports which can receive large vessels of 50,000-100,000 dead weight tons (DWT) so that its port system can handle 230-250 million tons of cargo in 2010 and 500-550 million tons in 2020.

Now, Vietnam's port system is able to handle over 170 million tons of cargo, up from 154 million tons in 2006, according to Nguyen Ngoc Hue, vice director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration.
