Former Philippine justice secretary Hernando Perez on Wednesday was charged over an extortion case involving 2 million U.S. dollars, local media reported.
According to local television network GMA News, in a 24-page order, Ombudsman Ma. Merceditas N. Gutierrez said Perez took advantage of his position as the then Secretary of Department of Justice by demanding the delivery of an amount of 2 million U.S. dollars to be used in the case against former president Joseph Estrada.
Also set to be charged before the court were Perez's wife, his brother-in-law, and business associate Ernest Escaler, the report said.
