A speeding passenger bus overshot a narrow road and fell in a deep ravine Friday morning in the northeastern Philippines, killing nine people and injuring some 10 others, police said.

Police Officer Rocky Garcia said a D-Liner bus was traveling from Cabanatuan City to Casiguran, Aurora province, when its sleepy driver lost control of the vehicle which plunged in 30 meter-deep gully beside the highway in the village of Malbang, Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija at past 10:00 a.m.

Garcia said rescuers rushed the injured passengers, including bus driver, to nearby hospitals.

Drivers who briefly fell asleep during lengthy countryside travel along Philippine highways frequently caused disastrous, if not deadly, road accidents.
