Marcus Stephen, president of the Pacific island nation of Nauru, Friday declared a state of emergency in order to dissolve parliament, Radio New Zealand International reported.

He also called a general election to be held on April 26.

President Stephen said the actions of the Speaker of the parliament David Adeang and his supporters had compromised the parliamentary process.

Nauru's parliament has been in a deadlock for months with nine members of parliament supporting each side, while Adeang had used his pivotal role to unsuccessfully try to force out government MPs.
