Two people died in a plane crash at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Whenuapai in the country's largest city of Auckland on Saturday.

The accident happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. (0430 GMT) on Saturday, Radio New Zealand reported.

The two-seater Thorp T-18 light aircraft, believed to be a civilian plane, crashed between a hangar and an administration block.

The ambulance service said the plane's two occupants died at the scene after ploughing into the ground.

The air force said the plane was possibly from a civilian aviation club.

Thirteen fire crews attended the crash and firefighters provided lights at the scene. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
