Two hundred and twenty-two members of parliament (MP)in Malaysia were sworn in as the first session of the 12th Parliament convened its meeting here on Monday after the March 8 general election.

Ninety-nine MPs were new faces while the opposition was represented by 82 MPs, more than four times the number in the last parliament.

The first meeting of the first session of the 12th Parliament began Monday after the 12th general election on March 8.

The 222-seat parliament will be in session for 16 days until May 27.

In the general election last month, the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) won only 140 of the 222 parliamentary seats in the election, losing its long-held two-thirds majority in the parliament.
