An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook the Japanese central-eastern Prefecture of Chiba Prefecture and surrounding areas Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake occurred at around 7:30 am (2230 GMT Wednesday) and was felt in Ichihara and other cities in the northeastern and southern parts of Chiba Prefecture and southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture.

The focus of the quake was some 40 km below the seabed off the east coast of Chiba Prefecture.
