Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus Wednesday reiterated his country's commitment to the Iraq mission, saying Lithuania will continue to fulfill its "international obligation," according to reports reaching here from Vilnius.

Adamkus, who is on an official visit to Estonia, believes that there is no need to debate the extension of Lithuania's military contingent in Iraq since the country's position is quite clear, said his spokesman in Vilnius.

"Being a president, I understand what the Constitution entrusts me and will exercise my duties," he said.

The president's remarks came after Lithuania's parliament, foreign ministry, and defense ministry were involved in a bitter debate on the issue.

Defense Minister Juozas Olekas said in his view, Lithuania had fulfilled its commitment to the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq, so he refused to sign on any extension of the Iraq mission.

Olekas' stance was refuted by Lithuania's deputy foreign minister, Zygimantas Pavilionis, who said the withdrawal from Iraq at the moment is "irresponsible and inconsistent with the national security interest."

Lithuania joined the coalition forces in 2003. It maintains a 53-troop-strong mission there within a rotating framework. The 11th contingent is expected to relieve the one on duty in May.
