At least seven people were killed in South Korea's western coast on Sunday after being swept away by a sudden large wave, the Korean Coast Guard said on Sunday.

The accident occurred at 12:41 p.m. (0341 GMT) at the coast in Boryeong City, South Chungcheong Province, when large wave swept through the coast and drew dozens of people along the beach into the waters, local media said.

"We have confirmed seven deaths and eight other injuries in the accident. All the eight injured were taken to hospitals nearby while two of them are in critical condition," a spokeswoman of the Coast Guard told Xinhua through telephone.

However, she said it is unclear how many people remain missing.

Local media said at least 49 people were drawn into waters in the accident. Fishing boats have found 29 people in waters nearby after the accident.

The coast guard has sent vessels to the spot to search the missing people, the coast guard said.

The death toll is expected to rise as more victims will be identified.
