Shahbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Monday filed his nomination papers to contest the forthcoming by-elections, local TV channel Geo reported.
Shahbaz Sharif, younger brother of former prime minister and chief of PML-N Nawaz Sharif, will contest the by-elections from two provincial constituencies in Lahore, said the report.
Shahbaz Sharif was quoted as saying that the rejection of his nomination in general elections was an excess against him and hoped it would not be repeated this time.
Shahbaz Sharif and Nawaz Sharif submitted their nomination papers to contest the general elections last year but were turned down by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The ECP said the Sharif brothers were facing charges and not eligible to contest elections according to some election rules.
The general elections were held on February 18. The Pakistan People' s Party and PML-N emerged as the two largest parties of the National Assembly, lower house of the parliament. The two parties agreed to form a coalition federal government on March 9.
Local media reports said on Monday that Nawaz Sharif was not likely to contest the by-elections. The PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari will also stay away from the by-elections, reports said.
Usually some national and provincial assemblies seats will be left vacant for various reasons and by-elections will be held to fill the vacancies. The by-elections are slated to be held on June18.
