The Election Commission of Pakistan Monday announced that the by-elections would be deferred for a period of two months till August 18.

The polling of by-elections was scheduled to be held on June 18 but will be postponed till August 18 due to various reasons, a statement released by the ECP said.

"Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad, Secretary, Election Commission of Pakistan has informed that in view of the Report received from the Home Secretary, Government of North West Frontier Province regarding adverse law and order situation prevailing in that province, the forthcoming Budget Sessions in the National and Provincial Assemblies and overall security environment, the Election Commission has deferred for a period of two months, the holding of Fresh and By-elections to vacant seats in the National Assembly as well as Provincial Assemblies of four Provinces," said the statement.

The general elections of Pakistan was held on February 18 and the Pakistan People's Party won the most number of National Assembly seats. It formed a coalition federal government with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
