Greg Urwin, the secretary general of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, has formally tendered his resignation to the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, the PACNEWS reported on Tuesday.
Urwin's resignation letter was received by the office of the Prime Minister of Tonga, the chair of the Forum, on Monday, the Suva-based regional news agency reported.
A formal announcement on the resignation would have to be made by the chair of the Forum, Feleti Sevele, the PACNEWS quoted an unnamed senior official as saying.
Urwin, who is completing his second term in office, is believed to have been forced to take this decision on medical grounds. He was serving his second three-year term in office, which is to be completed at the end of 2009.
The resignation letter has been copied to all the leaders of the 16 member countries of the Pacific Islands Forum, who will now consult on a replacement for Urwin, a diplomatic source told PACNEWS.
A replacement for Urwin is likely to be on the agenda of the annual summit of Pacific Leaders in Niue in August.
