ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan Tuesday appealed all member states to offer "generous" aid to Myanmar where a cyclone has killed more than 10,000 people.
"We express our profound sympathies and condolences to the families of victims, to the government of Myanmar and to all involved in the rescue and reconstruction that are going on now," he told reporters on the sidelines of a think-tank seminar here on Tuesday morning.
"We are now appealing to all ASEAN governments, the private sector and the civil societies... to please respond generously," he added.
He also called on ASEAN dialogue partners, which include China, Japan and South Korea, to offer aids to Myanmar.
Surin also said that bilateral and regional efforts are now being coordinated with the international agencies, including the UN agencies, "in order to bring quick, effective and adequate assistance to Myanmar."
He said he had discussed the disaster with Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who suggested that ASEAN should help Myanmar as a regional grouping.
He said Myanmar's Foreign Minister Nyan Win welcomed help from the UN and governments around the world.
