At least five people were killed in clashes between two criminal gangs in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi on Wednesday, local media reported.
The exchange of fire erupted at the Liyari area of Karachi on Wednesday noon and continued for several hours, the News Network International (NNI) news agency quoted police as saying.
The gangs have been operating in the Liyari area since long and have turned the locality into the center of crimes and drugs, said Zulfikar Mirza, home minister of southern Pakistan's Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital.
A large number of policemen, equipped with bullet-proof jackets and backed up by armored vehicles, raided the hideouts of the gangs, according to police.
"The police have launched an operation which will continue unless the criminals are arrested," Mirza said.
