Myanmar Prime Minister Thursday urged the country's people to unite and cooperate to overcome current hardship resulting from a severe cyclone storm that struck the country last weekend, according to a night broadcast of the state radio.

Thein Sein, who is also Chairman of National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee, urged for facilitation of proposed assistance by construction entrepreneurs for the recent cyclone-hit areas.

As monsoon season is approaching, prompt reconstruction of the damaged houses are required, he said at the committee's meeting, adding that victims should be arranged to move to nearby areas free from cyclone.

He assured to provide construction materials to the victims and dispatch medical teams to the forefront for effective treatment.

In order to encourage and facilitate donation by entrepreneurs, telephone contacts should be properly introduced, he stressed.

He urged early re-operation of the Hlaingtharyar industrial zone and reopening of rice shops.

He attributed the survival of the victims to the effective measures of the committee, including prompt transportation of relief material to the disaster-torn areas, opening of relief camps and bringing water to the areas.

The deadly cyclone, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, hit five divisions and states -- Yangon, Bago, Ayeyawaddy, Kayin and Mon, of which Ayeyawaddy and Yangon sustained the heaviest casualties and property losses.

According to official statistics, a total of 22,997 people died in the cyclone Nargis that swept Myanmar's five divisions and states.

Altogether 42,119 people remained missing and 14,003 were injured.
