Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said here on Friday that he was concerned by the escalation in violence and tension in Lebanon following a third day of fighting in the war-torn country.
Smith urged all sides involved in the latest flare-up of violence to exercise restraint and try to avoid a further escalation of tensions.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) reissued a warning urging Australians not to travel to Lebanon due to what it said was a highly volatile and worsening security and political situation.
The violence was triggered earlier this week when the US-backed governing coalition declared pro-Iranian group Hezbollah's military communications network illegal.
In response, Hezbollah gunmen took control of large areas of Beirut on Friday and attacked media outlets in their campaign against fighters loyal to the governing coalition.
Security sources said at least 10 people had been killed and 20 wounded. Source: Xinhua
