Indonesia required more than 650 ships by 2010 to carry the country's commodities, Director for Sea Transport of the Transport Ministry Effendy Batubara said here Monday.
The director told reporters that the government was obligated to transport 14 kinds of commodities by Indonesian ships. And transportation for 10 of them, such as cement, timber and rice, must be implemented by 2008, and four others, such as oil, gas and coal, by 2011.
"We need 654 ships to transport the commodities," he said on the sidelines of a seminar in the capital.
The director said that the ships included big and tug ships.
