Eight people were killed and about 30injured after two trains collided early morning on Wednesday in Bangladesh's Brahmanbaria district, 80 km northeast of capital Dhaka, the police said.

Ataul Kibriya, police head of the district, told Xinhua by phone that the accident happened at around 1 a.m. (1900 GMT Tuesday) when a Sylhet (northeastern city)-bound train from Dhaka rammed into another train standing at the station, leaving six of the stationary train's passengers dead on the spot and dozens injured.

Of the injured, two died after being sent to hospital.

Two relief trains rushed to the spot and started salvage operation after the accident.

A railway inquiry team from Dhaka is investigating the accident.
