Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and his visiting New Zealand counterpart Helen Clark agreed on Wednesday to enhance economic cooperation and discuss the possibility of working for a bilateral free trade agreement.
At a joint press conference following their talks, Fukuda and Clark said the two countries will carry out concrete cooperation in a wide range of areas including the environment, security, and science and technology.
In a joint press statement, New Zealand appreciated Japan's initiative to halve global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and pledged to make joint efforts with Japan in international negotiations for a substitute pact to replace the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012.
The two leaders expressed "strong concerns" over rising food prices' impact on world economy and called for concrete measures to ensure the stability of food supplies.
On the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, the two sides urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to fulfill its promises to the international society and hand in a full and accurate declaration of its nuclear programs.
Clark arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday for a three-day visit.
