South Korea's ruling party on Thursday asked the government to provide unconditional food aid to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The government should help those people in DPRK by providing unconditional humanitarian aid, said Ahn Sang-soo, floor leader of the ruling Grand National Party(GNP).

The administration of President Lee Myung-bak, who took office in February, said earlier Thursday that it will set aside about 10billion won (9.5 million U.S. dollars) for this year to support NGOs helping DPRK. South Korea spent 11.7 billion won in 2007 on providing assistance to the DPRK.

The South Korean Unification Ministry estimated that DPRK requires at least 1.42 million tons of food to fulfill its minimum food demand this year.
