Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said the government was committed to maintaining a minimum credible deterrence through conventional and strategic capabilities as Pakistan had a major role to play for peace and stability in the region.

Gilani made the remarks while meeting Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majeed and Lieutenant General Khalid Ahmad Kidwai, the director general of the Strategic Planning Division (SPD) here on Friday.

Gilani said impregnable defense could only be achieved through economic sovereignty, smooth political process, good neighborliness, friendly international environment and good governance, the News Network International news agency reported.

Tariq Majeed updated Gilani about the ongoing up-gradation programs in the defense sector. Khalid Ahmad Kidwai briefed Gilani about the strategic assets and various projects undertaken by the SPD to make the defense of Pakistan impregnable.
