South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday told his Cabinet to take sufficient anti-earthquake measures for domestic school buildings and other public facilities.
"South Korea has already sent a rescue team to China's earthquake-hit Sichuan Province and private companies are actively participating in the provision of donations to China. We should now pay more attention to our disaster preparedness," Lee said at a weekly Cabinet meeting.
"We should reexamine our disaster prevention systems to minimize casualties in case of an emergency. In particular, extra attention has to be given to old school buildings built before the government's strict earthquake-resistant design rules were enforced in July 2005," said the president.
Under current regulations, South Korea's infrastructure facilities must be designed to withstand earthquakes up to 6.0 on the Richter scale, while the minimum standard of quake-resistance for ordinary buildings is set at 5.0 magnitude.
