Namgya Sherpa from Nepal has successfully scaled the world's highest mountain Mt. Qomolongma from the southern route in Nepal, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation said Wednesday.
Sherpa, who serves as the high altitude worker of Friendship Mt.Qomolongma Expedition-2008, became the first mountaineer to scale the 8848-meter-high Mt. Qomolongma in the spring season of 2008 when he reached the summit on Tuesday.
After him, another 12 climbers of different nationalities reached the summit from the Nepalese side Wednesday morning, a Ministry official said.
A total of 32 mountaineering expeditions have obtained permits to scale Mt. Qomolongma during spring season of 2008, the Ministry said. Spring season is considered to be best time to summit the peak before start of monsoon rain.
World record holder Apa Sherpa, who has successfully climbed Mt.Qomolongma for 17 times, is one among those. The 77-year-old Nepalese is the oldest person to scale the mountain in this season. Source:Xinhua
