Gunmen Friday sprayed bullets on three brothers leaving one dead and two wounded in old part of Bangladesh's capital Dhaka as they did not pay extortion of 1.2 million taka (about 17,143 U.S. dollars), police said.

The shooting took place in front of the victims' residence Friday evening. The gunmen opened fire on the three brothers while they were chatting outside their house. One brother died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital .

Injured brother Arifur Rahman told reporters that three days ago, one of the gunmen whom he could identify asked them to leave their house and demanded 1.2 million taka. Otherwise, they will be killed.

Police said as many as nine people were killed in the capital in last three days for various reasons like extortion, business or family disputes. A police officer on condition of anonymity admitted that the law and order situation looks deteriorating despite the fact that the state of emergency is in force since Jan.11, 2007.
