Abnormal weather has seriously affected the agriculture industry of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), official news agency KCNA reported Wednesday.
The highest daytime temperature was three degrees Celsius lower and sunshine intensity 20 percent less this year than average mid-May levels, KCNA quoted an official of the Central Meteorological Institute as saying.
The abnormal weather has delayed rice-transplantation by 10 to 15 days in general and seriously affected the growth of maize crops on large areas of fields, the official said.
Meanwhile, the UN World Food Program warned last month that the DPRK faces a food crisis, saying its annual food deficit is expected to nearly double from the 2007 volume to 1.83 million tons.
