South Korean President Lee Myung-bak plans to hold his first summit with Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Tokyo in July on the sidelines of the G-8 summit, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said on Thursday.
South Korea initially pushed for Lee's trip to Moscow for the summit within the first half of this year but it has been deferred due to the busy political and diplomatic schedules of the new leaders, Yonhap quoted unnamed South Korean Foreign Ministry officials as saying.
"President Lee will visit Moscow in autumn for another summit with the Russian president, in which they will have full-scale discussions on issues of mutual concern," Yonhap said.
South Korea is not a formal member of the group of eight advanced nations but its president will attend the upcoming meeting, which will be held in Japan's northern city of Toyako, as an observer.
Yonhap said Russian Vice Foreign Minister Andrei Denisov will travel to Seoul shortly after the autumn summit for the inaugural "strategic dialogue" between the two nations.
