A Japanese man discovered a woman living in his home for months without his permission, according to media reports.

The 57-year-old man who lives alone in the western city of Fukuoka found his food mysteriously disappearing from his refrigerator.

He installed a security camera and found someone walking in his home while he was out. So he called the police.

Police found a woman named Tatsuko Horikawa in a closet with a space only big enough for a person to squeeze into.

She had sneaked a mattress and several plastic bottles into the cubby hole, said the police.

The woman claimed that she had no place to live in and had lived in the man's house for about a year. Police suspect she might have been closet-hopping moving from house to house.

However, it is unclear how she managed to enter the home.
