Pakistan has advanced the official clock by one hour at the stroke of midnight Saturday to use more daylight time in a bid to conserve energy, according to local media on Sunday.
This is a part of the measures announced by the Pakistani government on May 14 to save energy, local newspaper The Nation reported.
The federal cabinet on May 14 decided that all major commercial centers and shopping plazas would be closed at 09:00 p.m. local time from June 1 to the end of August in a bid to help overcome the problem of load-shedding.
The cabinet also revived the previous policy of the Musharraf government of 2001 to advance the watches by one hour for three months from June 1 to take advantage of the daylight.
Pakistan is facing a massive shortfall of around 4,000 megawatts of power, forcing the government to practise load-shedding around the country.
The Punjab government and other provincial governments have issued instructions in this regard to all the concerned officers who will get the directions implemented. Source: Xinhua
