Three Japanese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have pledged a special assistance for 10,000 selected cyclone-hit Myanmar households who are in worst need of food and resettlement, the local Flower News reported Monday.
With an initial financial aid of 2 million U.S. dollars, the three Japanese NGOs out of 26 in that country -- UNCCO, JEN and Peace Win will provide the assistance through Myanmar's biggest business organization of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the report said.
The victimized households to be benefited by the three Japanese NGOs' aid will be selected from the worst-hit regions, it said, adding that once the authorities approve the move, the aid programwill be carried out under an NGO-to-NGO basis.
Meanwhile, a Japanese disaster relief medical team, along with eight other remaining foreign medics, has been rendering direct medical aid to the country's cyclone victims and working in the hardest-hit township of Laputta in Ayeyawaddy delta since May 29.
According to the Japanese embassy here, the country has also decided to contribute emergency assistance for the cyclone disaster totaling 6.989 million U.S. dollars through UN agencies in Myanmar.
Deadly tropical cyclone Nargis, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, hit five divisions and states -- Ayeyawaddy, Yangon, Bago, Mon and Kayin on May 2 and 3, of which Ayeyawaddy and Yangon inflicted the heaviest casualties and massive infrastructural damage. The storm has killed 77,738 people and left 55,917 missing and 19,359 injured, according to official death toll.
