Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Monday reiterated his firm resolve to fight terrorism as an U.S. delegation is visiting Islamabad.
Pakistan is firm in its resolve to fight terrorism and extremism in accordance with its values and national interest, the official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) quoted Musharraf as saying while he held meeting with U.S. Under Secretary for Defense Eric S. Edelman who is heading a six-member delegation.
Musharraf said the stable and broad-based relationship between Pakistan and the United States is in the interest of both countries and also vital for lasting peace in the region.
Edelman said the U.S. government is committed to assisting Pakistan government in meeting its legitimate defense needs and bolstering its capabilities in war on terror.
Edelman stressed for increased collaboration in training, joint exercises, defense procurement and production, the APP said.
The visit by the U.S. delegation came days after U.S. President George W. Bush called Musharraf on Friday and reaffirmed his support for the Pakistani leader.
During the phone call, Bush "looks forward to President Musharraf's continuing role in further strengthening US-Pakistani relations."
Musharraf has been under pressure as Pakistan's ruling coalition is seeking to reduce his power or oust Musharraf from power. Meanwhile, the new government's strategy to negotiate with local militants also upset the United States.
