A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook the South Pacific island nation of Solomon Islands early Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage and a tsunami alert has not been issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 03:20 am Solomon Islands local time (17:20 GMT Tuesday), 65 km west of KiraKira, on San Cristobal island, and 184 km southeast of Honiara, the capital of Solomon Islands.

An hour later, a 6.1 magnitude quake was recorded off the Indonesian island of Flores, and there have been no immediate reports of damage.

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons in April last year triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
