A series of moderate earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.9, 5.8, 5.5 and 5.3 struck Indonesia on Wednesday, with no immediate report of damage or casualty, meteorology and disaster management agencies said here.

At 08:25 Jakarta time (0125 GMT), the 5.8 magnitude quake jolted Gorontalo province in eastern parts of the country, with epicenter at 136 kilometers southwest the province in the South Sulawesi Island and at 15 kilometers in depth, an official of the meteorology agency Anas Fauzi told Xinhua.

About two hour earlier, a 5.3 magnitude quake hit East Nusa Tenggara province, still in the parts, with epicenter at 27 kilometers southeast Labuhanbajo town of the East Nusa Tenggara province and at 20 kilometers in depth, Fauzi said.

About one hour earlier, a 5.5 magnitude quake rocked Mentawai Island near Sumatra Island, with epicenter at 13 kilometers northeast Sipura town of the island in West Sumatra province and at 30 kilometers in depth, he said.

Few minutes earlier, two aftershocks each with magnitude of 5.9struck East Nusa Tenggara province, said the official.

The main shock measuring of 6.0 occurred at 00:31 Jakarta time (1731 GMT Tuesday) with epicenter at 40 kilometers northwest Rutengtown of East Nusa Tenggara province and at 30 kilometers under seabed, an official of the agency Fauzi said.

An official of the disaster management agency Adam Malik said that all the quakes caused no damage or casualty.

"We have checked all the areas closest to the epicenter, so far no buildings damage or people get hurt," he told Xinhua.

Indonesia sits at a vulnerable zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates meet that causes frequent volcanic movements.
