The Indonesian police detained more than 50 members of a radical group in a pre-dawn raid here Wednesday in response to Sunday's attacks during a rally on religious freedom.
The raid went peacefully as the Islamic Defender Front (FPI) members got inside the police trucks without resistance near their headquarters in Central Jakarta.
At least 58 FPI members were brought to the Jakarta Police headquarters for questioning, reported major news website Detikcom.
Their leader, Habib Rizieq, reportedly turned himself in to the police.
Involving some 2,000 officers, the raid came after Jakarta Police Chief Adang Firman late Tuesday urged the FPI members, who had been named suspects in Sunday's attack on peaceful demonstrators to surrender.
Calls are mounting for the government to disband the FPI, which has frequently vandalized bars, nightclubs and pool houses in the capital.
On Sunday, hundreds of FPI members attacked a peaceful rally for religious freedom in the capital, leaving dozens of protesters injured, including women and children.
After the attacks were aired in many TV reports, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday condemned the attacks and ordered security authorities to take stern actions against violent movement. Source:Xinhua
